Picture this. … Jade lagoons washed azure by the coral reefs; fine, sun-bleached coral-hite sands; skanking fronds of coconut palms burnished gold by the tropical sun; fertile coral reefs of exotic marine plants and tropical fish. Bit like reading a travel brochure, isn't it?

This is all to be found on Tanzania's Indian Ocean Coast, along with Arab-influenced culture, mediaeval towns of labyrinthine alleyways and muezzin calls to prayer, the original Swahili culture of the Coastal fishermen (Swahili comes from the Arabic word for coast), isolated game reserves and tragic history. Not bad for a country known for it's inland attractions.

This is a region that appears in the original Lonely Planet guidebook, the 1st Century "Periplus Of The Ancient Sea" and Ptolemy's 4th Century "Geography", that Vasco De Gama was visiting in the 15th century and Arab and Chinese sailors had been stopping by for centuries. A region from where the colonialists set out to claim Africa for God, from where one of the greatest inhumanities of mankind was based (and stopped) and from where the nations that fought two World Wars would first come to blows. Not bad for a country that has no history outside Olduvai Gorge.

This is a region to visit and hunt Marlin (or swordfish), watch lions bathe in the sea (or, indeed, elephants), witness drum festivals (or bull-fighting) or dive East Africa's most highly-rated (but least explored) reef. Not bad for a country where all the wildlife is inland.

The East African Safari and Touring Company can introduce you to this fascinating and exotic region, either as an addition to your safari or as a safari unto itself. It might involve a Zanzibar spice tour, big game fishing in Hemingway's wake off Mafia Island, a Saadani Game Reserve safari or a diving excursion off Pemba Island. Or it could be something different. Once again, it's your choice.
