Before
the Portuguese invasion of the Indian Ocean in the 15th Century,
the East African coastline was a vibrant centre of trade between
the Arabian peninsular, the Indian sub continent and distant
China.
Trading ports dotted the coastline as far south as Mozambique
and the ruins left behind, mosques and tombs, can be found hidden
amongst the overgrown mangrove swamps, beneath the shade of
ancient baobab trees and on lonely islands scattered on the
horizon.
The Swahili coast offers the modern visitor a chance to experience
this fascinating past, as well as the vibrant present. Explore
the ruins, swim in cerulean blue waters, drift along the coast
under sail and surround yourself with the abundance of life
that the mangroves support. |
